THE RISE OF FUTSAL

A recent survey conducted by FIFA’s Development Committee found that out of 209 member associations, some 150 are now playing the sport of Futsal. An 18% increase over 2006.

A total of 115 member associations participated in the qualification process for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012.

Another interesting statistic is that out of the 150 associations where Futsal is played, 116 of them have a national men’s championship in place at the very least. This represents a significant step forward for some countries, which have prepared the ground for the development of the game and can now be considered emerging Futsal nations.

The survey also revealed some encouraging information on how member associations go about running the sport internally. While nearly 61% of them have set up a Futsal committee and /or department, around 57% also engaged in futsal-related educational and promotional activities. In this respect, both schools and universities have potential roles to play in supporting member associations in their efforts to promote Futsal and provide a structure for its development.

Peter Sousa, Kenny Dill and the members of the Bermuda Futsal Federation are to be commended for their vision and forward thinking in bringing this exciting version of the game to the island.

In their first ever tournament held recently at the Dellwood School, over 200 young people turned out in 3 age groups to take part in what was a well organized and very enjoyable 2 weekends of 5-a-side action.

With the BFA recently announcing the delay of the start of the league due to the fields being used for cricket, futsal is the ideal sport to keep our young people focused. It can be played at most school gyms which otherwise sit empty on Saturday mornings. With the game being played indoors there is no excuse not to play due to rain.

Futsal is fast paced and played in tight spaces so your touch and speed of thought are greatly improved. Indeed many managers when interviewed say that today’s player must be able to ‘think’ on the ball as well as be fit and skilful.

So keep up the good work BFF! I for 1 will be looking forward to your season and the progression of futsal in Bermuda.

THE CHALLENGES OF YOUTH COACHING

The tasks of the coach are more complicated than ever and constant improvement is necessary. The
evolution of the mental aspect of the youth players as they grow older sometimes creates significant

problems for the youth coaches. The influence of parents and the outside pressure can be challenging. As a result, some coaches will give up prematurely. We need to avoid this as we need so many coaches at all levels. However, remember in order to be successful with children and youth coaching it is absolutely necessary to love the children, to be happy when you are with them, to be happy to see their improvement and to be proud of their accomplishments. Every coach needs to work to improve to try to “deliver the goods”. We could and should never finish learning. When somebody believes he knows everything he begins to regress as a coach. Experience, football knowledge, passion, humility, love for coaching and desire to improve are the most important attributes of a coach.

All that was written by Jacques Crevoisier and I carried those words in my head and heart as I worked the Skillz N Drillz camp at the Devonshire Rec. during the month of August.

At times you can get so caught up in the game itself that you forget that your role as ‘coach’ involves so much more than football.

Like it or not, to your young players you are an educator, a role model, in some cases a father figure and very often the most positive male influence in his life.

As coaches we must take our responsibility seriously and show our young people not only how to play the game but valuable life skills that so many of us seem to be lacking.

Teach them the importance of making time by being prepared and having your drills set and ready to go when they arrive. Show them respect and they will be respectful. Be polite and they will respond with good manners.

Being a coach is so much more than the game of football, it is the game of life.

Keep up the good work coaches.   Coach Pete

WORKING AS A TEAM!!

The following was taken from an article written by Andres Duarte of Athletico FC (Colombia) and published in the July/August issue of the NSCAA’s Soccer Journal

‘A collection of individuals exists when people are asked to work together. They tend to behave as individuals, stay in their comfort zones, do their own thing and avoid conflict.

As a group, people begin to clarify their goals, define their roles, establish their purpose, create rules and look for a leader who will be responsible for the communication of the group, provide direction, assign tasks and review performance. The leader in this case is the coach.

The goal in any organization is to become a balanced team. However, most teams get stuck in group mode. They expect outstanding results but that does not happen consistently. Further progression is needed to structure and create a team. Team members must have clarity of purpose and as a team share responsibilities and rewards. They must commit to goals, identify team values, make decisions and guide their actions accordingly, respond quickly to opportunities and embrace change. The team focuses on positive energy in all environments and team members are versatile when dealing with others. A team offers the opportunity for everyone to lead, therefore, the head coach and coaching staff share the work load.

So how do we feel about our clubs? How do we feel about our football’s governing body? Are they providing our children a positive and progressive environment in which they can grow and improve? Where is our football now? Has it improved after the appointment of a well paid technical director? Are you as a parent happy with the quality of coaching your child is receiving at club and national level? Are you as a coach happy with the direction of your national association? What are we doing to improve ourselves as coaches? Parents, what changes would you like to see to the structure of our football? Has the time come for us to form a coaches association so that we can become the change we want to see? Think about these things. We’d love to hear your opinions. Until next time. Bless.

THE EUROS AND AMERICA'S PASSION

Hello footy fans and welcome to what we hope will be the first of many articles designed to provide a bit of entertainment and stimulate a healthy debate or two.

I recently completed the NSCAA’s National License course which was held on the campus of Curry College in Milton, Ma. Having registered for the course and received the information I felt I was physically prepared but mentally, although open-minded, I was a bit nervous. The dorm room accommodations and rock hard plastic mattress added to the challenge that lay ahead, not to mention a room-mate that snored loudly at exactly two thirty am every morning!

Breakfast was at seven every morning followed by a brief lecture on the topic of the day then it was straight to the natural grass field which we were told had been ‘prepared for us since May’ and was in immaculate condition. There we would practice our coaching skills, assessed by the NSCAA’s staff, an interesting group of men and women who have all coached at the college level and beyond. During the week long course they would come to make us feel more confident in our abilities while pushing us out of our comfort zones. I did find it somewhat intimidating at times. In my group of eleven, I was at forty two years old by far the oldest student. The closest to me I believe was twenty six! They were all college graduates or still in school, one young lady was at university in Florida at a division one school and her skill on the ball and knowledge of the game were impressive for a twenty year old. Others included a young man who is on the staff of the Red Bulls and another who had previously worked with the New England Revolution, all were either high school or college coaches. Everyone I spoke with wanted to know more about Bermuda and our football or soccer as they all call the game. Many of the instructors have actually been to the island and raved about our younger players and how we are, at the under fourteen and younger levels, so much better technically than our U.S. counter parts. Many of the division three level coaches are disappointed that they are unable to recruit from the island as they do not offer sports scholarships.

Such is the passion for the game in the U.S. that on the third day, the entire course schedule was re-arranged so that we could watch the Germany versus Italy Euro semi-final match. Attendance was mandatory we were told but I don’t think that would have been an issue, the hall was full some forty minutes before kick off! As the game went on I found myself listening to the other students’ opinions on players, thoughts on tactics and couldn’t help but be impressed with their knowledge of the game. With our ESPN, Sky Sports and Fox Soccer channels we are well up-to-date here with the football world but these future professional coaches displayed a wealth of understanding and passion that surprised me as I wasn’t expecting this from my American friends.

I experienced a challenging and very rewarding week. I truly stepped out of my comfort zone and I feel that I have grown as a coach and as a man. I walked away with an internationally recognized and respected qualification and I made connections and friendships in the game that will last a lifetime. I encourage all my fellow coaches here to get yourselves out there and experience the growing passion that is U.S. ‘soccer’!

Until next time, keep your eye on the ball!
